BSEE Director Brian Salerno, along with Gulf of Mexico Region Director Lars Herbst and Doug Morris, Chief of Office of Offshore Regulatory Programs, traveled to Cancun, Mexico late last month for the International Regulators Forum (IRF) Annual Meeting. The IRF is a group of eleven regulators of health and safety in the offshore upstream oil and gas industry. The purpose of the IRF to is to improve offshore safety through better collaboration and communication.
Director Salerno delivered a keynote presentation on the need to operationalize a global culture of safety. He spoke about risk evaluation and mitigation, with a focus on data needs and sharing. His talk was followed by a discussion on how regulators prioritize and resource their activities based on risk.
In addition to Director Salerno’s speech, there were presentations by Mexico, Norway, Canada, Denmark, New Zealand, Netherlands, Brazil, and the United Kingdom. These sessions focused on standards development, well control initiatives, and the need for transparency and data sharing. The 2015 IRF annual meeting and offshore safety conference will be hosted by BSEE in Washington DC.
