BSEE Participates in Clean Gulf Conference, Supports Youth Initiative in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS - Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) staff participated in the annual Clean Gulf Conference and Exhibition last month in New Orleans. Engineers from the Oil Spill Preparedness Division provided attendees at the conference with updates in key areas of the program and the Gulf of Mexico Region Deputy Director Michael Prendergast discussed offshore source control.

In support of the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Youth Initiative, BSEE staff hosted 23 local high school students who are studying engineering at McDonogh 35 Senior High School.

The BSEE team, along with presenters from the U.S. Coast Guard and industry, conducted a seminar on career opportunities in the oil spill planning, preparedness, and response community that included a demonstration on detecting buried oil using a specially-trained canine.

The 2-day career session also featured BSEE partners including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Fish and Wildlife Service, Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator's Office, Texas General Land Office and The Wildlife Center of Texas who were on hand to discuss career opportunities.

Each year Clean Gulf provides a forum for responders, operators, regulators, equipment providers and the environmental community to openly discuss best practices and lessons-learned.
