Director Salerno Delivers Keynote Speech at 2015 API Offshore Safe Lifting Conference and Expo

HOUSTON – Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) Director Brian Salerno was one of the Keynote Speakers at the 2015 American Petroleum Institute (API) Offshore Safe Lifting Conference and Expo today in Houston.

The conference, attended by approximately 175 offshore industry lifting and safety personnel, highlighted the importance of lifting operations within the context of an operators Safety and Environmental Management System (SEMS), as well as the responsibility of operating companies, standards development organizations, and regulators to minimize risk.

Director Salerno, along with U.S. Coast Guard Captain Joshua Reynolds, addressed attendees on offshore safety issues and practices in today’s offshore lift operations environment, from the perspective of each agency.

'Review of our incident data within BSEE underscores that the problem of lifting incidents has not yet been solved. Hard numbers show that lifting is not as safe as it should be,' stated Salerno. 'This conference is a great place to tackle these questions, and perhaps they will serve as a logical starting point for us to consider how to go about improving lifting safety.'
