This research project will fill an existing gap in oil spill response in the United States by providing hands on training in chemical dispersants for first responders, planners and government agencies by utilizing the unique capabilities of Ohmsett - The National Oil Spill Response Test Facility. This project will develop a chemical dispersant training course to be conducted at Ohmsett that includes practical hands-on experience with handling, safety, application, monitoring, efficacy and recovery in breaking wave environments. The contractor will develop training materials and exercises for conducting the class and will provide them to MMS in digital and hard copy formats.
The Principal Investigator is working with the Ohmsett facility staff and MMS to develop the course curriculum and training materials.
The course curriculum has been submitted and approved by MMS. The PI is has submitted the initial draft of the teaching curriculum and teaching materials. MMS has provided suggested changes. The PI is developing the final instructor guide and student handbooks.
The course curriculum, instructors guide and student handbook has been submitted and approved by MMS. The first dispersant training class was successfully conducted April 27-May 1, 2009 at the Ohmsett facility. This project is complete.
