TAP-679-Best Practices in Plugging Extended Reach and Ultra-Extended Reach Drilling Wells

Office/Division Program

Research Initiation Date (Award Date)
Research Performing Activity
Texas A&M University
Research Principal Investigator
Dr. Jerome Schubert
Description

This project will identify the best and safest available methods of well abandonment that could be applied to extended reach, and ultra extended reach drilling wells. It will determine any limitation or challenges associated with the technologies and supporting surface equipment. Additionally, it will then propose possible solutions to these limitations and challenges, as well as potential new methods to set effective plugs in near horizontal wells. To accomplish this, a study will be performed to determine how the industry has historically plugged horizontal, multilateral, and extended reach wells, as well as the success of these plugging techniques.
