Description

The objectives of this project are the following:

  • Develop insight on the dynamic response characteristics of suction bucket foundations using advanced numerical modeling. Assess these characteristics for a range of soil conditions, suction bucket configurations and loading conditions. Based on the analytical results, identify important factors that affect the structure-foundation system response under cyclic loads.
  • Develop design guidance for the suction bucket foundations in different soil conditions and support structure configurations (e.g., single or multi-bucket foundations) including design consideration for different loading conditions. This guidance shall address the effects of cyclic degradation on both the strength and stiffness of the suction bucket foundation.
  • Develop recommendations for future laboratory program and associated analytical studies to confirm response mechanism identified in the initial analytical phase of work, validate analytical results, and assist with demonstrating the feasibility and value of the suction bucket foundations for offshore wind turbines.
