The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) is creating an important new position within the Alaska Region to work with Alaska's Native organizations, Tribal Governments, coastal communities and community based organizations (CBO), launching a new era of enhanced communication and coordination. The Tribal and Community Liaison will be a member of the BSEE Alaska Region senior leadership team, and work directly with the Region Director to ensure BSEE is responsive to the concerns and interests of Alaskan communities. With the creation of this new position, the bureau hopes to strengthen relationships, ensuring continued coordination on these important issues.
“It is extremely important that we are continually engaged with the people of Alaska,” said Alaska Region Director Mark Fesmire. “The new Liaison will be critical to building a respectful and trusting relationship.”
The Tribal and Community Liaison will be responsible for developing a communications strategy with Alaska Tribal Governments and communities affected by offshore energy development. This will include maintaining regular contact with appropriate leaders in Alaska's Native organizations, Tribal Governments, CBOs, and communities, keeping them apprised of general offshore activities, and facilitating communication with BSEE leadership. Other responsibilities will include maintaining awareness of issues involving the Alaska Native organizations, Tribal Governments, CBOs, and communities that may impact offshore operations and ensuring the Region Director and staff are aware of these issues. Prior to the creation of this position BSEE coordinated with Alaskan communities through the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Tribal Liaison.
